An ectopic pregnancy may only be discovered during a regular prenatal scan and may not usually present with symptoms. If you experience any symptoms, they usually appear between weeks four and twelve of pregnancy. Treatment with a medication called methotrexate may be advised if an ectopic pregnancy is identified early but active monitoring is not appropriate. This prevents the growth of the pregnancy. It is administered to your buttocks as a single injection. After treatment, you won't need to stay in the hospital, but routine blood testing will be done to see how well the medicine is working. Sometimes a second dose is required, and if it doesn't work, surgery can be required. After treatment, you must continue using a dependable method of birth control for at least three months.
